This Memorial Wall is our tributes to those who have died as a result of child abuse, domestic violence, rape, religious abuse, or other types of abuse. Some of these people we knew personally, others we only heard of. Abuse is not a theoretical concept, it happens to real people, and costs lives. It's important to honor those we lost to abuse by telling their stories, so that the secret that killed them does not remain secret, and so that other lives might be saved, as a result of increased awareness.

March 18th:
Raheel Siddiqui
died on March 18th, 2016

Minutes before Raheel Siddiqui, a Muslim Marine recruit, jumped to his death during the early phases of boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., he was hazed and struck by his drill instructor, Marine Corps officials said Thursday. Raheel, 20, a Pakistani American arrived at Parris Island on March 7 and had been with his training company for only a day when he reported on March 13 that he wanted to commit suicide, Marine officials said. The first week or so of Marine boot camp is known as “forming” and involves recruits going through a series of medical evaluations and uniform issues before training. After forming, recruits are “picked up” by their drill instructors in an infamous ceremony that introduces recruits to their company and the intensity of recruit training. Raheel told his drill instructor that his throat hurt, officials said, and after failing to respond to the drill instructor, he fell to the floor, apparently in pain. When Raheel continued to not respond, the drill instructor “forcefully” slapped him between one and three times. He then ran down the length of the barracks and vaulted a railing, falling to his death. It is against training regulations for a drill instructor to strike a recruit. The drill instructor who officials say hazed and slapped Raheel had already been under investigation in connection with the ill treatment of another Muslim recruit and for reportedly consuming alcohol around the trainees.

Kyleigh Mae McDaniel Robinson
died on March 18th, 2010

1yo Kyleigh from Vermont, USA, was "a very cheerful, happy baby, always smiling and bringing joy to those around her," according to her family. "Her loving spirit and joyful attitude are a wonderful memory for those who loved her." Her mom's boyfriend was babysitting her, got drunk, and was playing with Kyleigh by tossing her up in the air and catching her. At one point he dropped her and she began to cry. He was unable to quiet her, became frustrated, and slammed her down several times to stop her from crying. The medical examiner said it's likely death came quickly, right after the beating.

March 19th:
Adrian Langlais
died on March 19th, 2015

2yo Adrian from Texas, USA, was taken to hospital on his birthday. His mom's boyfriend put him on a timeout, which involved yelling, then silence, and then Adrian had a black eye and other bruises on his face. Adrian's mom went to work the next day even though the child could barely move and only opened his eyes when she kissed him good-bye. The boyfriend spent 14 hours online, searching for "how to tell if someone has went brain-dead," "toddler can't walk or use right side after hitting head," and other such. When he finally called 911 and Adrian was taken to the hospital, the child was vomiting, showing signs of a seizure, had swelling around his eyes, neck, and head, and bite marks on his body. Adrian died the next day.

March 20th:
Caylee Hoehne
died on March 20th, 2016

4yo Caylee from Nebraska, USA, "was the type of girl that gave others something to look forward to," according to her dad. "Not trying to boast her or anything, she always wanted to help her daddy and mom with whatever we were doing. She always tested her waters to see how far she could push you, but she'd make it up to you by flirting with you. She was the type of girl that would impact your day and impact your life forever with her smile. She was a daredevil. She always wanted to go further. I remember being at the park with her when she was only two, and she was swinging on monkey bars scaring her mother and me." Caylee died of skull fracture and other injuries after her mom "tossed her into bed three times and squeezed her around her torso." Medical examiners, on the other hand, felt that at least some of the bruising must have been caused by hitting the child with some type of wire. The mother is in jail awaiting trial.

Zahra Abrahimzadeh
died on March 21st, 2010

44yo Mrs Abrahimzadeh had three children and an abusive husband. The family moved from Iran to Australia, where she was able to seek help, and eventually moved with her kids to a domestic violence shelter. The four lived in hiding, but the next year Mrs Abrahimzadeh went to a Persian New Years function at a local convention centre, where her husband killed her in front of about 300 witnesses. "He was controlling, domineering, regularly resorted to verbal abuse and to violence," said their son. "He was very well-respected in the community (and) people would say 'your father is a gentleman',but obviously, they did not know about what happened behind closed doors. For my mother, there was nothing much to do... if you have got a bully over your head, beating you up, you just sit there and cry."

March 22nd:
Liam Fee
died on March 22nd, 2014

2yo Liam from UK was murdered by his mom and mom's girlfriend, who initially blamed his death on another boy. Liam suffered more than 30 injuries, including a broken leg, a broken arm, and a fatal blow to his abdomen that ruptured his heart. Two other children in the household were abused as well: one boy was forced to sleep in a cage, and another - in a room with rats and snakes which he was told "ate little boys."

Det Insp Rory Hamilton, of Police Scotland, said: "During joint interviews with specially-trained detectives and officials from Fife Council, the evidence began to build towards a picture of horrendous abuse which directly contributed to the version of events being put forward by the two accused being utterly discredited. This was a complex, challenging and sensitive investigation which involved interviewing two young children to establish the level of abuse and neglect both they and Liam Fee had been subjected to. It was because of their courage that detectives were able to identify Rachel and Nyomi Fee as being responsible for a wide range of serious offences against three children."

March 24th:
Shamir Hudson
died on March 24th, 1998

8yo Shamir from Maryland, USA, lived with his 7yo brother, 6yo sister, and their 58yo adoptive mom. She was approved for adoption in 1995, after fostering them for about a year. Things turned bad when the children were transferred to Faith Deliverance Academy, an unaccredited private school. "These children were slowly tortured," said the kids' old kindergarten teacher. "Every time we tried to intervene, the Department of Social Services said our reports were unfounded."

Shamir was beaten to death. An autopsy determined that he died of wounds of every "size, age and direction," including a broken rib, a lacerated liver and hemorrhaging from his head. According to police reports, a burn on the child's arm and two open wounds on his legs were covered with duct tape.

"Obviously, we have looked again at all those referrals from the school and there just wasn't enough evidence to warrant a court order to remove them from the home," county social services director said. "We did receive multiple complaints about the children, but only two about the child who died." In Worcester County, with a population of about 35,000, four protective services case workers handle as many as 250 cases of suspected child abuse a year, officials said. "This has to be the saddest and most brutal case I have witnessed in my years on the bench," the judge said before imposing the 30-year sentence.

March 26th:
Michele Davis
died on March 26th, 2015

35yo Michelle from Arizona, USA, had seven children (ages 3 to 15) and an abusive husband who has been arrested at least four times for domestic violence and child abuse. She took care of the kids, was going to school to become a nurse, and was active at online support groups for abused women. "She was very compassionate," her dad said. "And she was very much a people person that wanted to be there for people."

On March 25th the whole family was at home, the father got upset with one of the kids for playing video games, and struck him on the face. The boy complained to mom, Michelle confronted her husband, and soon 911 received two phone calls at the same time: one from the children, pleading for help, and one from the father, crying hysterically and apologizing for killing his wife. Michelle was found with 13 stab wounds, and died in a hospital the next day. The man is held on murder charges, the kids are with their grandma, Michelle's mom.

"There's times when you're going throughout your day trying to get done what needs to get done, and then it all of a sudden dawns on you that she's really gone, and then quickly comes into my mind those kids and what some of them saw," her family says.
